Illegal immigrants have been surging across the U.S. border in record numbers recently in hopes that Hillary Clinton wins the presidential election next month, Border Patrol officials say.

"The smugglers are telling them if Hillary gets elected, that there’ll be some sort of amnesty, that they need to get here by a certain date," U.S. agent Chris Cabrera told CBS News Tuesday.

"They’re also being told that if Trump gets elected, there’s going to be some magical wall that pops up overnight — and once that wall gets up, nobody will ever get in again," he said.

On some days, Border Patrol agents encounter as many as 1,000 illegals along the portion of the border in McAllen, Texas.

The area is in the Rio Grande Valley area of South Texas, which has long drawn large numbers of aliens crossing in from Mexico.

"We’re getting mass spikes of people crossing and turning themselves in," Cabrera said.

Most of the illegals are taken to a migrant center at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in McAllen before they are released by Border Patrol with ankle monitors, CBS reports.

Many then file for asylum.

Trump has vowed to build a wall along the Southern border should he win the White House on Nov. 8.

Last week, he accused the Obama administration of deliberately speeding up the citizenship process for immigrants so they can vote.

"They're letting people pour into the country so they can go and vote," Trump told a meeting of the National Border Patrol Council, The Washington Post reports.

Clinton has pledged to propose immigration legislation in her first 100 days that would include a path to citizenship, generally in line with the reform plan approved by the Senate in 2013 but spurned by the House.

Trump has said that he opposed any pathway for any immigrants in the United States illegally.

They must return to their home countries and seek legal entry if they want to come back, the Republican said.

Those illegals who choose to stay are subject to deportation — and Trump has called for ending "birthright citizenship" to those born in the United States, CBS reports.
