A series of explosions followed by gunfire occurred Thursday in central Jakarta, Indonesian police and state news agency Antara have reported.
Jakarta police said there was an explosion in front of the Sarinah shopping center, near the United Nations office. There was no immediate news on casualties, although photos on social media showed a person lying on the ground.
The rupiah extended losses to drop 0.7 percent to 13,926 a dollar, prices from local banks show. The Jakarta Stock Exchange fell 1.2 percent.
