Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is just $800 million from becoming the richest man in the world, Forbes reported Wednesday.
Bezos' net worth increased $2.2 billion this week because of a 2 percent increase in Amazon's stock price, which continues to soar, putting his total at $89.3 billion compared to $90.1 billion for Microsoft cofounder Bill Gates.
Bezos has made major moves over the past few years. Amazon in June announced it would purchase Whole Foods Market for $13.7 billion in cash, a reveal that gave Bezos about a $2 billion boost in net worth. And in 2013 Bezos bought The Washington Post newspaper for $250 million. Revenue and profits are up at the newspaper as subscribers grow, digital ad revenue increases, and monthly web traffic was up 56 percent as of June.
Bezos' net worth has increased by $16.5 billion since March, when Forbes published its 2017 Billionaires List. Gates has been the world's richest person on the list for 18 of the past 23 years, but Bezos could knock him off soon, according to Forbes.
