Speculation increased Saturday that former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is gearing up for an independent run for president.
Ian Bremmer, a consultant and Time magazine political columnist, raised the specter via Twitter:
Bremmer is president of Eurasia Group, a consulting firm established in 1998 with offices in New York, Washington, London and Tokyo. The message was re-tweeted nearly 300 times by late Saturday afternoon.
Bloomberg, 73, who left the Republican Party in 2007 to become an independent, was New York's mayor 2002 to 2013.
He returned to managing his media company, Bloomberg L.P., after leaving Gracie Mansion and has advocated for strong gun-control laws and other liberal causes through his foundation.

Rupert Murdoch last month took to Twitter to call on Bloomberg to run for president, saying that "it's time" for the former mayor "to step into the ring."
Murdoch, the company's executive chairman, included the call in a tweet in which he said that Donald Trump — the current front-runner in the Republican sweepstakes — had become a "very serious candidate."

For his part, Trump said this week that he was boycotting Fox News, one of the media companies under Murdoch's empire, over what he said was unfair campaign coverage.
After Fox News tweeted back that it had canceled an appearance by the developer on "The O'Reilly Factor," the company said that Chairman and CEO Roger Ailes would meet next week with Trump.
On Friday, Trump said Fox would "have to treat me fairly" before he could end his boycott.
In 2013, Bloomberg ruled out a bid for the White House,
telling New York magazine that the notion was "just impossible."
"I am 100 percent convinced that you cannot in this country win an election unless you are the nominee of one of the two major parties," he said. "The second thing I am convinced of is that I could not get through the primary process with either party."
