The Miss Universe pageant ended on an uncomfortable note Sunday night when host Steve Harvey announced the wrong winner, then had to return to the stage to make the correction after the first runner up already had been crowned and was receiving applause.
Harvey announced that Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez Arevalo was the winner, and she received the Miss Universe Crown and sash. As she was standing waving before the cheering crowd, Harvey walked back on stage, clearly uncomfortable.
"I have to apologize. The first runner-up is Colombia."
Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach looked confused. Unsure, she walked to the front of the stage and stood beside Miss Colombia who was still wearing the crown and sash. After a few moments the crown was placed on Wurtzbach's head as the show quickly ended.
Harvey said he took personal responsibility for the mistake and held up the card for cameras, showing Miss USA as second runner-up, Miss Colombia as first runner-up and Miss Philippines as Miss Universe.
Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump was once owner of the pageant, but sold it earlier this year after he created controversy over his comments about Mexican immigrants.
He retweeted a comment that suggested he should have stayed.
Harvey was apologetic and took to Twitter himself to say he was sorry. Unfortunately he misspelled Philippines and Colombia in his original tweet, which was captured on screengrab.
