Montana Polygamists Apply for Marriage License

By    |   Wednesday, 01 July 2015 09:23 PM EDT

A polygamist family attempted to get a marriage license in Billings, Montana on Tuesday, but was turned away, KRTV reports.

Nathan Collier, who considers himself married to both Vicki and Christine, showed up at the Yellowstone County Courthouse to obtain a marriage license for himself and Christine. He already is legally married to Vicki.

"We just want to add legal legitimacy to an already happy, strong, loving family," Nathan told the station. "All we want is legal legitimacy. We aren't asking anybody for anything else. We just want to give our marriage and our family the legitimacy that it deserves."

Story continues below video.

The act came less than a week after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled same-sex marriage legal nationwide. Opponents of same-sex marriage have said the ruling will lead to calls for legalized polygamous marriages, or even polyamorous ones, which involves multiple people all married to each other.

In the Collier's case, Nathan considers his marriages to each woman a separate union.

When he and Christine asked courthouse officials for a marriage license they wrote "NA" in the line asking about the dissolution of any previous marriages.

Officials told them that polygamous marriages are not legal in Montana.

"It's two distinct marriages, it's two distinct unions, and for us to come together and create family, what's wrong with that?" Christine said. "I don't understand why it's looked upon and frowned upon as being obscene."
