The New York Times has reached out to subscribers who said they canceled their subscriptions after the newspaper brought on conservative columnist Bret Stephens, Politico reports.
"Our customer care team shared with me that your reason for unsubscribing from The New York Times included our decision to hire Bret Stephens as an Opinion columnist. I wanted to provide a bit more context," NYT publisher Arthur O. Sulzberger Jr. writes in an email to subscribers.
"First, it's worth underscoring that The Times's newsroom, which functions separately from our Opinion department and is led by executive editor Dean Baquet, has sharply expanded the team of reporters and editors who cover climate change," Sulzberger wrote. "No subject is more vital."
The Times hired Stephens last month. His initial column, titled "Climate of Complete Certainty," centered on climate change and calls the 1.5 degrees Fahrenheit that Earth has warmed since 1880 "modest."
Leading climate scientists blasted the Times for allowing Stephens to publish "inaccurate and misleading statements," and Michael E. Mann, a climate scientist at Pennsylvania State University, launched the hashtag #ShowYourCancellation.
A number of readers did that.
