GOP Convention Theme Blasts Obama: ‘We Built This!’

Tuesday, 21 August 2012 10:17 AM EDT

President Barack Obama’s comment earlier this summer that business owners “didn’t build that” continues to haunt him going into the final campaign stretch as Republicans are planning to put the gaffe front and center at their convention next week, Fox News reported, and titling Tuesday night’s session “We Built This!”

Sher Valenzuela,  candidate for lieutenant governor in Delaware, will address the convention that night, Fox News reported. Valenzuela and her husband started an upholstery business that makes padding for baseball umpires and military vests worn by members of the Israeli military. She will be joined by a slate of swing-state elected officials, including Sen. Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire, Gov. John Kasich of Ohio and Gov. Bob McDonnell of Virginia.

The theme and list of speakers are meant to highlight comments Obama made in Roanoke, Virginia last month when he noted the federal government’s role in infrastructure and education.

“If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.”

Republicans and business owners pounced on the remark and said it reflected how out of touch Obama is with business.

The Obama campaign consistently says he was quoted out of context, but Romney pointed out that the entirety of the speech is worse than the sound bite.
