Republican Rep. Peter King of New York says President Barack Obama should stop being defensive on American spying on its allies.
Appearing Sunday
on NBC's "Meet the Press," King said the work of the National Security Agency has saved thousands of lives, not just in the United States, but also in France, Germany and throughout Europe.
When German Chancellor Angela Merkel complained to Obama about news that the NSA had been listening in on her personal cell phone for 10 years, Obama replied he would have had them stop had he known about it.
U.S. intelligence helped uncover the Hamburg plot that led to the 9/11 attacks, King noted.
"We're not doing this for the fun of it," he said. "This is to gather valuable intelligence which helps not just us, but also helps the Europeans."
