Newsmax Media CEO Christopher Ruddy said Thursday that President Donald Trump "needs to hit the reset button" and not worry about Attorney General Jeff Sessions or Russia probe special counsel Robert Mueller and focus on his agenda instead.
"We all need to get beyond this," Ruddy told Christiane Amanpour on CNN International. "The president needs to hit the reset button.
"Not worry so much about Sessions and Mueller," Ruddy continued. "Worry about making the country better by putting forth the legislation he said he was going to do.
"And he's the guy that can do it," Ruddy said.
He said the president's tax cuts and infrastructure plan could be the basis of a populist agenda.
President Trump has consistently badgered Sessions on Twitter over the past week for recusing himself from the Justice Department's Moscow probe, comments the attorney general said Thursday were "hurtful."
However, that does not necessarily mean Trump will fire Sessions, the former four-term Alabama Republican senator, Ruddy said.
"The president lets people know how he feels," he told Amanpour. "It doesn't mean that he's going to necessarily act in a way that will be harmful to his political interests.
"Sessions is popular with conservatives, but Donald Trump is a lot more popular.
"I don't know of any Republican president in recent history that had the base so strongly and consistent, and the poll data shows this," Ruddy continued.
"Over 90 percent of the people who voted for him support him still," Ruddy added. "Nobody's saying that they're going to oppose the president."
Ruddy, who said he most recently spoke with President Trump last week, declined to speculate on whether he also would terminate Mueller.
"I have said publicly that I think it would be a mistake to fire this special counsel," he said. "I have also said publicly that I believe the president's success comes from his popularity.
"This is a man who I have always known as being a unifier and who draws people together."
However, Ruddy acknowledged "I know some people don't feel that because of the very bitter campaign that was waged and the harsh media attacks that are going on against him."
Still, Trump can "grab that center" if he passes such bipartisan legislation as healthcare, tax reform, and infrastructure, he said.
"He's the Republican that can do it.
"Remember, he was the guy who came out and called for protecting people on Social Security, protecting people on Medicare," Ruddy explained.
"When he's very true to his core values, I think he brings people together."
That includes taking the lead on healthcare, Ruddy said. He likened the House Republican plan to "a very damaged football.
"They didn't even get the buy-in of their own House members," he told Amanpour. "They didn't get the buy-in of their Senate colleagues.
"The president's been fixing the mess that these guys created.
"The lesson here for the president is don't let Congress lead," Ruddy concluded. "When Donald Trump . . . leads, when he organizes something, it's done properly."
