Republicans are pursuing every legal recourse to now get Bill Clinton's schedules, pertinent given Clinton Foundation activities while Hillary Clinton was Secretary of State,
Politico reported.
And they'd like to get them while they can use still them as leverage before November. However, that's not likely to happen.
Though the State Department says there are nearly 5,500 pages set to be released in response to a bevy of Freedom of Information Act lawsuits, the agency is required to release just 500 per month, Politico reported.
And they'll be heavily redacted to protect the former president's privacy.
"Given the well-documented conflicts of interest for the Clinton State Department posed by his paid speeches and corrupt family foundation, the notion that Bill Clinton's schedule should be off-limits from scrutiny is ridiculous," said RNC spokesman Raj Shah, according to Politico.
Republicans believe their legal challenge hinges on three core elements:
- Bill Clinton's post-presidency office is funded by taxpayers
- Clinton worked closely with the State Department
- International donations to the Clinton Foundation while Hillary Clinton was Secretary of State
Politico reported that it received 1,000 pages of heavily redacted documents — after six years.
Bill Clinton's schedules were circulated to dozens of people, including State Department officials: Chief of Staff Cheryl Mills, Deputy Chief of Staff Huma Abedin, Hillary Clinton scheduler Lona Valmoro, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Communications Philippe Reines, and Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs Andrew Shapiro.
The judge in the case has not yet scheduled a hearing, according to Politico.
