Gov. Perry: 'God Help Us' if Romney Doesn't Win

By    |   Friday, 04 May 2012 06:43 AM EDT

Texas Gov. Rick Perry says he is fully behind presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney and “God help us if he doesn’t win.” The former presidential candidate also told Fox News’ Neil Cavuto Thursday President Barack Obama must not be re-elected “or our country truly is going to be on the precipice of bankruptcy and international affairs.”

Perry, who had supported candidate Newt Gingrich before the former House speaker pulled out earlier this week, said he is “a heck of a lot more comfortable” with Romney than Obama.

“The reason we have contests is to pick a winner — and we have done that — Mitt Romney will be our nominee,” Perry said. “He will be 10 times better than Barack Obama, particularly when it comes to the economy. And, as they said in 1992: ‘It`s the economy, stupid.` It`s still about the economy.

“Mitt — he`s going to be our nominee — we`re going to be behind him,” Perry said. “And God help us if he doesn`t win.”

Cavuto noted many conservatives still don’t have the “fire” for Romney that the base had for other candidates. Perry said that will change now that the former Massachusetts governor has the nomination all but sewn up.

“I suggest to you we better get a fire going,” the Texas governor said. “Four more years of Barack Obama — when you look at debt that is on the future generations, when you look at what he is talking about doing from the standpoint of coming in and telling states how to run their business — this is not even in the ballpark of close.

“Mitt Romney has to win this presidential election in November of 2012, or our country truly is going to be on the precipice of bankruptcy and international affairs that I will suggest to you none of us are going to like.” Perry said. “I never thought there would be anybody that would make Jimmy Carter look good — Barack Obama is doing it.”
