Paul Ryan: FBI 'Stonewalling' in Clinton Email Case

House Speaker Paul Ryan said the investigation into Hillary Clinton's email server reminds him of the one involving the IRS scandal — and both reflected "stonewalling" by the FBI.

Ryan talked about the FBI's Clinton investigation during an interview on "The Hugh Hewitt Show" Thursday morning.

"Yes, and it's not the first time we've experienced this," Ryan said when asked if the FBI is denying the House's constitutional oversight in the Clinton case. "I was part of the IRS investigation in my last job here in Congress, and I would say it's a very, very similar story. It's a story of stonewalling.

"The reason we know about these things is because of our investigation, our oversight. [Rep.] Jason Chaffetz [of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform] is doing a great job. You know all of these things that you just discussed because of our oversight. But as we do this oversight, we see more obfuscation. We see more misleading. We see that the claims that were made six months, a year ago about servers and emails and devices were false when they were made — knowingly false.

"So we clearly see that she's not being truthful. … So this is not a new story, unfortunately … but it's an ongoing one — and that, to me, is very alarming."

The FBI released its report on the Clinton case last week and it painted a poor picture of the former secretary of state. She claimed to not understand classification markings and also used eight BlackBerry devices during her four years at the State Department — including ones she purchased on eBay. One of her aides destroyed at least two with a hammer.

Ryan said the FBI, which decided not to recommend charges be brought against Clinton, is playing politics.

"The FBI's not supposed to be minimizing political damage or political stories — they're supposed to be getting to the truth and holding people accountable," Ryan told Hewitt. "And so when they make things like this, it makes them look political."
