House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wisc., said Thursday that the bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act will include legislation to defund Planned Parenthood.
"Planned Parenthood legislation will be in our reconciliation bill," Ryan said in his weekly press briefing, according to The Hill.
Reconciliation prevents a Democratic filibuster, allowing Republicans to bypass the 60 votes barrier in favor of a simple majority vote.
Two days ago, Republicans issued a report calling for Planned Parenthood to lose its access to Medicaid reimbursements and federal family-planning funds, as well as recommending that Congress allow states to exclude abortion providers from Medicaid programs, according to The Washington Post.
"My hope is that this is going to provide the information that is necessary for action to be taken," Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., the chairwoman of the panel that issued the report, told the Post. "This will be a Congress and an administration that will be known for standing for the women, for the protection of unborn children, and the protection of life."
Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of Susan B. Anthony List, praised Ryan for his vow.
"Today's commitment by Speaker Ryan to re-direct the abortion giant's taxpayer funding to community health centers is a victory for women's health care," she said in a statement, The Washington Times reports. "Community health centers provide far more services than Planned Parenthood and outnumber them 20 to 1 nationwide. We commend Speaker Paul Ryan on his continued resolve to fund women's health care, not abortion."
