Former San Francisco Police Chief Heather Fong, an advocate for sanctuary cities for illegal immigrants, is being considered to as chief of the Border Patrol, Fox News reports.

Fox quoted sources at the Border Patrol, Homeland Security and Capitol Hill as saying Fong is on a list of candidates to replace Mike Fischer, who announced in October he is resigning.

Fong would be the first outsider to lead the Border Patrol in the 90 years since the agency's founding.

"If they bring (a police chief) in for political purposes based on the sanctuary cities model, that politicizes the job and I think it completely undermines credibility and morale in the organization," Rep. Mike McCaul, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee told Fox News.

The Border Patrol agents' union also opposed her appointment.

Fong refused to cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement during her five years in San Francisco, the sanctuary city where Kate Steinle was shot to death this past summer. An illegal immigrant who had been deported multiple times has been charged in her killing.

Fong appeared in public service announcements welcoming illegal immigrants into San Francisco and told reporters her police department did not cooperate with ICE.

The final decision on the new chief will be made by Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Gil Kerlikowske, who said on Monday, "At this time, CBP has not begun the search for the Chief of the U.S. Border Patrol. It is completely false that any individual could be a potential candidate at this time. We are currently preparing the paperwork to begin the process."
