Scott Walker: I Want to Talk About Hillary, not Trump

Focusing on Donald Trump is like "watching a car accident" instead of concentrating on an increasingly strong Hillary Clinton and taking the Republican presidential campaign in the direction it needs to go, Scott Walker said Monday.

"I want to be talking about making the country great," said the Wisconsin governor on Fox News' "America's Newsroom" show. "We live in a great country; we just need to act like it again."

Story continues below video.

Walker said he interjected during the GOP debate last week when Trump was being asked if he got any favors for donating money to Hillary Clinton or Nancy Pelosi because, he said, he thought it was important to shift the focus to Clinton as the Democratic Party front-runner of the race.

"She measures success in the economy by how much they grow Washington [government]," Walker said. "We understand it is about getting government out of the way and helping grow jobs around the country."

Plus, when it comes to foreign policy and America's safety, "everywhere in the world Hillary Clinton touched is more messed up today," said Walker of the former secretary of state.

He also said that refocusing attention to Clinton wasn't his initial strategy going into Thursday's prime-time debate.

However, the first 10 minutes of the debate were wholly focused on Trump: if he'd run as a third-party candidate, his stance on women, and the like, said Walker. "I thought it was important to remind people that the real opponent wasn't on the stage or in the earlier debate, but for most of America, it is Hillary Clinton."

Clinton "will be awful," said Walker, adding that if he wins the nomination, he can get the votes in the blue states needed to beat her.

Walker also said he agreed with comments made Monday by Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, another GOP candidate, who said that if he talked about every comment Trump made, his whole campaign will be consumed by it, as the real estate mogul is "drowning everybody out there."

Walker, though, said he is use to big battles, as "a hundred thousand protesters" tried to drown him four years ago over his stance on unions in his state.

"We didn't back down and got the job done, and I think this is a big test for us going into the general election," said Walker. "We will not talk about being distracted but who we are and what we are for, and lay out the details of how to make America great again and lead again."

Still, Walker said, Trump's language is "absolutely" inappropriate, and not just for the presidential campaign.

Voters are smart, though, he told the show, and in the end will realize that not every Republican shares the beliefs being expressed by one of the party's candidates.

"I think Americans are smart and will look at each and every one of the 17 Republicans, see what they say and how they say it," said Walker. "I hope to spend my time telling people what I am for. If it wasn't too late for Wisconsin, it is not too late for America.

"We can make the country great but we have to have the time and energy to focus on the economy and taking power from the hands of Washington and sending it back to the American citizens, and protecting our safety abroad. We have shown in Wisconsin we can do it."
