Ted Cruz Airs His Own Parody Ad in Iowa During 'SNL'

By    |   Saturday, 19 December 2015 06:37 PM EST

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz will air an ad in Iowa markets during this week's episode of "Saturday Night Live" made to look like one of the show's own parody commercials.

Cruz, who is leading some Iowa polls in the GOP presidential race, makes reference to the time he read Dr. Seuss' "Green Eggs and Ham" from the Senate floor during a filibuster.

The ad has Cruz sitting on a couch with his wife and two young daughters as he reads other "classics" to the children, such as "Frosty the Speaker of the House" (an apparent reference to former Speaker John Boehner), "The Grinch Who Lost Her Emails" (Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton) and "Rudolph the Underemployed Reindeer."

"In the spirit of the upcoming holiday, we are excited to bring a Cruz family Christmas into the homes of SNL viewers in Iowa," Independent Journal quoted that Cruz campaign as saying. "Ted is a long time fan of SNL, so the chance to film his own SNL-style commercial was an opportunity we couldn’t pass up!"

"Saturday Night Live" has featured an appearance this season by Clinton and was hosted by Republican front-runner Donald Trump.

After Trump's appearance, NBC said it would give equal time to four GOP candidates who requested it: Ohio Gov. John Kasich, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham and former Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore.
