Fmr. FBI Tom Fuentes: Emails Can Relate to Any One of Three FBI Cases

The newly discovered emails found on Anthony Weiner's laptop might be tied to three individual FBI investigations, including the one that was still ongoing with the Clinton Foundation, CNN's law enforcement analyst Tom Fuentes reported Saturday night.

"The Clinton Foundation case didn’t need to be reopened; it's never been closed; that’s ongoing," Fuentes, a former FBI assistant director, told CNN, outlining the events that led to FBI director James Comey's letter to lawmakers to review Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server.

"The team looking at Weiner’s computer, they went to the team of investigators that did the Clinton email case and showed emails to them earlier in the week. And that team said, 'This is really significant. We need to take this to the director. Maybe we need to take another look at the email case.'"

Fuentes, citing sources within the FBI, said three probes — the "pay for play" with the Clinton Foundation, Weiner's sexting with a teenager, and criminally passing classified State Department information on a private server — are now consolidating with FBI field offices into one larger-scope investigation.

"So that [Clinton Foundation] investigation is ongoing," Fuentes said "And Huma Abedin and her role and activities concerning the Secretary of State . . . and possible pay to play, that’s still being looked at. And now, we have her emails on the computer where the FBI already has a separate case going for Anthony Weiner’s activities with a minor girl.

"In a sense, it’s almost turned into a one stop shopping for the FBI as they could have implications affecting three separate investigations on one computer."
