John McCormack: GOP Backs Scott Walker With Cash Infusion

By    |   Friday, 31 October 2014 04:05 PM EDT

Republicans have been pumping millions of dollars into Scott Walker's war chest in an 11th-hour effort to assure the Wisconsin governor's re-election, says John McCormack, a senior writer for The Weekly Standard.

"A source with knowledge of GOP spending told us [the Republican Governors Association was] going to pump in $4 million to $5 million in the remaining weeks of the campaign," McCormack said Friday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"The recent questions in Wisconsin were whether or not the RGA would short-change Walker, because they didn't see the spending coming. They had a lot more spending on smaller races in the past.

"It turns out they are going to spend $2 million in the final two weeks."

The push was revealed as Walker's opponent, Mary Burke, was hit with claims by a former executive of Trek, the bicycle company Burke's family owns, that she was fired from her job there.

Her campaign has denied the allegation and calls it a case of politically motivated character assassination.

"It's kind of a semantic question right now whether she was fired or let go because she wasn't up to the job depending on how you want to phrase it," McCormack said.

He said that in North Carolina, the race continues to narrow between Democratic incumbent Sen. Kay Hagan, who leads by a slim margin of 1.6 percent over Republican Thom Tillis, with 13 percent still are undecided, according to RealClearPolitics.

"The big question I have right now is whether or not those who are undecided can break towards Tillis or maybe even those who are now saying they are voting for the Libertarian Sean Haugh," McCormack said.

"I talked to him earlier this week and he's an unconventional Libertarian. He supports Obama's Medicaid expansion, is critical of education cuts, supports abortion … up until birth, which puts [him] to the left of Ron and Rand Paul. He's got a chance there."
