Peter Morici: Stephanopoulos Scandal Part of Media Lefty Bias

By    |   Thursday, 14 May 2015 08:24 PM EDT

The disclosure that ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos gave $75,000 to the Clinton Foundation while reporting on the Clinton family and its charity is more proof that the mainstream media leans to the left, says economist and syndicated columnist Peter Morici, a professor at the University of Maryland.

But Stephanopuolos, who once served as Bill Clinton's White House communications director, shouldn't be fired, Morici said Thusrday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"He certainly shouldn't be reporting on [the Clintons], but it just goes to show you the bias of these media organizations and the fact that they really don't know that they're biased," Morici said.

"They don't really see the conflict of interest unless it's the other side. It's a ridiculous situation that George should continue or should have ever covered the foundation if he made a large contribution to it."

Stephanopoulos acknowledged he made donations to the Clinton Foundation in recent years without disclosing those contributions to his employer. His reports on the Clintons included an interview with former President Bill Clinton about the Clinton Global Initiative on "Good Morning America."

“I made charitable donations to the foundation in support of the work they’re doing on global AIDS prevention and deforestation. Causes I care about deeply," Stephanopoulos said in the statement.

"I thought that my contributions were a matter of public record. However, in hindsight, I should have taken the extra step of personally disclosing my donations to my employer and to the viewers on air during the recent news stories about the foundation. I apologize."

Morici told Steve Malzberg:

"I don't think George should be removed from his job in the sense that he shouldn't be covering news because he has political values and gives money.

"But the reality is, if you're a conservative and you move slightly on a line, then the media is going to be all over you."
