Ex-Justice Official: Department Politicized Under Obama

Americans should be concerned about corrupt and unjust prosecutions by the Justice Department, which are now worse than ever before, says Sidney Powell, a former Justice Department official who has written a scathing expose about her onetime employer.

"There's been an increasing over-criminalization of the law and an increasing politicization of the Justice Department and the use of prosecutors," Powell, who began her federal law career in the Clinton administration, told "The Steve Malzberg Show'' on Newsmax TV.

"In the Justice Department . . . we were told beyond a doubt that you are to seek justice, and if that means you walk in a courtroom, and you do a better job of representing the defendant than his lawyer does, that's what you do.

"But the job of an assistant U.S. attorney is to follow the law and to seek justice," she said Wednesday.

In her new book, "Licensed to Lie: Exposing Corruption in the Department of Justice," out this week from Brown Books Publishing Group, Powell bares a series of missteps, cover-ups, malfeasance, and corruption of justice that have caused her to question America's justice system.

Among the cases she reviews are the Enron collapse and the wrongful prosecution of the longest-serving GOP U.S. senator in history.

"All Americans have something to be concerned about," she said.

"We need equal protection and equal enforcement of the laws, and if law enforcement is to mean anything, it should also apply against those who are supposed to enforce the laws."

Powell said the Justice Department under President Barack Obama is "the worst I've ever seen it by far."

"On top of that, it's like the government is seeking more privacy for itself while it's taking away all of our privacy rights. It's just beyond the pale."

Powell said there are remedies available.

"There are number of things that could be done right now. Pending in Congress for the last two years is the Fairness and Disclosure of Evidence Act," she said.

"It was supported by a bipartisan group of senators and supported by a number of national organizations. It's Senate Bill 2197, and the only group that I know of that opposes that legislation is . . . the U.S. Department of Justice."
