If the U.S. Supreme Court rules that the Constitution gives same-sex couples the right to marry, it will "transform our civilization for a long time to come," Rep. Steve King tells
Newsmax TV.
"We've got thousands of years of human history and we know a man or a woman joined together hopefully in holy matrimony, blessed by children, raising the children in that family unit is the essential building block of all society," King, a Iowa Republican, said Tuesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show."

"Children do better when they're in that kind of a home. It's the most basic, social unit we have as a married man or woman. What seems to be lost in all of this is that marriage is about not the desires of adults, but what's good for kids."
The Supreme Court is now hearing arguments in the dispute over whether states can continue defining marriage as the union of a man and a woman, or whether the Constitution gives gay and lesbian couples the right to marry. Justices are expected to issue a ruling in June.
King believes the answer is clear.
"What's good for kids is to have a father role, a mother role and the two of them coming together making that sacrifice so that the children have the best opportunities to succeed," he told Steve Malzberg.
"That's why we [hold] marriage so strongly and we've done so throughout all of the millennia.
"To think we've had a debate going on in this country for let's say less than 20 years, and in that short period of time, they would hand this all over to the majority of nine judges to make the decision on what can transform our civilization for a long time to come ..."
