Gloria Allred to Bill Cosby: 'Do the Right Thing'

By    |   Friday, 05 December 2014 06:39 PM EST

Bill Cosby should "do the right thing" by working with the women who've charged him with sexual assault — an olive branch that will allow them to heal and help repair the famed comic's crumbling legacy, high-powered civil-rights lawyer Gloria Allred says.

"It would give him a chance to do the right thing.... Right now, there's a big cloud over his reputation and his legacy," Allred said Friday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

On Wednesday, Allred appeared with three teary-eyed women who said they were assaulted by "The Cosby Show" star in past decades, including one who claims she was only 17 at the time.

Allred proposes Cosby waive the statute of limitations in those alleged assaults and agree to be sued to get to the truth of "whether he is a saint or a sexual predator." As an alternative, she said, Cosby can create a $100 million fund and be judged by a panel of retired judges, who can compensate any of the claims they believe have merit.

"What could be fairer than the two alternatives that I suggested? It's fair to him, it's fair to the alleged victims, and it's an opportunity to resolve the claims," Allred told Steve Malzberg.

"And for there to be a healing among those who allege that they are victims and healing of Bill Cosby.

"Right now there's a big cloud over his reputation and his legacy and this is a way if he's got arguments about why he did not do these things, or there's not sufficient evidence to prove them, he can present that."

Allred said if Cosby, 77, has such confidence in his innocence, "why wouldn't he enter into the process? … That would be good for Mr. Cosby and the victims, because then the judge and jury can decide in a public trial who's telling the truth.

"Instead of just operating in the court of public opinion, this would be really fair to both Mr. Cosby and all the alleged victims," she said.

Cosby, who quit as a board member of his beloved Temple University on Monday, has been accused by more than a dozen women of drugging and sexually assaulting them in decades past.

Other than angry denunciations from his lawyer Marty Singer, Cosby has declined to say much in response. Last month, Cosby told Florida Today: "I know people are tired of me not saying anything, but a guy doesn't have to answer to innuendos. People should fact check. People shouldn't have to go through that and shouldn't answer to innuendos."

This week, the U.S. Navy rescinded the honorary chief petty officer title conferred in 2011 on Cosby, who served in the Navy from 1956 to 1960.

"The Navy is taking this action because allegations against Mr. Cosby are very serious and are in conflict with the Navy's core values of honor, courage and commitment," the service said in a statement, reported in the Navy Times.

The allegations have also resulted in several TV deals being postponed and concerts being cancelled.
