Political strategist Dick Morris told
Newsmax TV on Friday that the United States should be hoping that the military coup against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was successful.
"Erdogan won the election overwhelmingly years ago and has been re-elected twice on a platform of Islamizing the Turkish government and making it kind of like Iran," Morris told host John Bachman on "The Steve Malzberg Show" in an interview. "The military has been resisting that.
"It's been a conflict between those who really want Turkey to go the way of Europe and those who want it to go the way of Iran.
"So, root for the military in this case," he said. "I hope our administration does.
"[President Barack] Obama sometimes roots against the interest of the United States in favor of the bad guys because he's procedurally hung up on democracy or is perhaps sympathetic for the Muslim regime."

Morris told Bachman that the unrest is "an exact parallel completely" to the 2013 coup Egyptian Army Gen. Abdel Fattah el-Sisi led against President Mohamed Morsi. He was elected president in 2014.
"It's exactly the same thing," he said. "The opposite of the Iranian revolution.
"This is crucial because Turkey obviously and strategically is completely crucial — and Iran cannot be a major threat without at least some degree of control over Turkey.
"This is a very good development, and you have to hope that Obama doesn't screw it up."
Morris is author of the new book
"Armageddon: How Trump Can Beat Hillary" with Eileen McGann, out this week and available at bookstores everywhere and online at both
Barnes & Noble and
Amazon.
