Sen. Ron Johnson: Media, Dems Are Sabotaging Trump Administration

Media organizations and Democratic lawmakers have been trying to bring down the Trump administration since President Donald Trump took office, Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., told Newsmax TV.

During an appearance on "The Joe Pags Show," Johnson said the efforts have drastically slowed the confirmation process for presidential nominees — and something needs to be done about it.

"I think there has been a concerted effort to sabotage this administration since day one on the part of many in the media and of course our Democrat colleagues in the House and Senate," Johnson said. "So obviously what they're trying to do is just slow down the confirmation process.

"That does two things: that clogs the Senate calendar in terms of floor time to bring up other measures for debate. We just end up being almost 100 percent in the personnel business, and it prevents this administration from staffing itself."

Johnson, who chairs the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, said he would like to see the nuclear option — which limits the number of votes needed to 51 from 60 — invoked for sub-cabinet and lower court nominees.

"We did that to confirm Judge Gorsuch and I’m proposing we do that to limit debate on the floor of the Senate for any sub-Cabinet or any lower court judicial nomination to just two hours," Johnson said.

"The committee's doing a great job vetting nominees, both sides can weigh in on the nominee. Once they pass committee, I think two hours of debate will be more than enough time. Take those two hours and then vote and move on."

Understaffing within the Trump administration has been an issue for months, and Republicans claim Democrats are holding up the process.
