Stephen Moore: Boehner's Taunt 'Causes Friction' Inside GOP

Friday, 25 April 2014 07:10 PM EDT

House Speaker John Boehner did not endear himself to conservatives when he used a comical and whiny voice on Thursday to imitate how they opposed immigration reform, according to Stephen Moore, chief economist for The Heritage Foundation.

"I’ve always liked John Boehner. He's been a pretty decent Speaker, but lately he has been mocking conservatives in a way that does not advance his cause," Moore told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"This causes friction within the conservative coalition within the House. Look, I'm actually in favor of immigration reform. We need to get that done in a responsible way, but you know, for him to mock his opponents and his own party, I don't think serves his cause."

Story continues below video.

Boehner poked fun at fellow GOP congressmen for being afraid of immigration reform as he spoke to the Middletown Rotary Club in Ohio.

"Here's the attitude: 'Ohhhh, don't make me do this. Ohhhh, this is too hard,'" Boehner brayed to the amused crowd.

"We get elected to make choices. We get elected to solve problems, and it's remarkable to me how many of my colleagues just don't want to …"

Moore, who also is chief economist for The Heritage Foundation, added:

"Wherever you stand on immigration reform, it is nuts to be mocking people who oppose [it]. You're not going to get a compromise in that way."

Moore said he is puzzled by President Barack Obama's delay of the Keystone XL pipeline project.

"The Keystone pipeline is a real head-scratcher to me because this is 10,000 jobs [and] these jobs pay $50,000 to $100,000 a year," he said.

"Many of them are unionized jobs. I remember when I used to think that the Democrats cared about the union, and I believe this was a blunder of the first order by this president.

"What I've been advising the Republicans on Capitol Hill [is], it's time Republicans went to these blue-collar industrial unions, the Teamsters, the pipefitters, the construction industry, [and say] that we're the ones who care about your jobs."
