The media coverage of President Barack Obama’s interview with ABC News’ Robin Roberts, in which he said gay people should be allowed to get married, is just an effort to distract the public from the bigger issues, talk radio host Rush Limbaugh said.

“You and I are in the midst of one of the most coordinated media swarms,” Limbaugh said. “The effort to distract, the effort to mislead, to misinform, it’s in full swing.”

Limbaugh said there is a disconnect between what is projected in the media and through polling data and what is actually going on in the United States in terms of legalizing gay marriage.

“Every damn time [gay marriage has] been on the ballot, it loses in landslide numbers,” Limbaugh said.

“How can we have polling data which shows overwhelming national support ... for gay marriage and yet every time it comes up on the ballot, it loses? It hasn’t even come close to winning when it’s put to a vote.”

Limbaugh says the media would have you believe gay marriage is legal but that hasn’t happened. In fact, Limbaugh says, 32 states have turned down amendments to do so.

“Where is gay marriage being legalized in this country?” Limbaugh asked. “It just lost two days ago in North Carolina.”

If Obama supporters really listened to what Obama said in his interview Thursday, they would realize that he did not legalize gay marriage, Limbaugh said. Rather, all Obama did was get the LGBT community to open up their checkbooks.

“He did not say that he thinks [gay marriage] ought to be legal. ... He didn’t tell anybody that gay marriage should be mandatory,” Limbaugh said.

“Gay marriage isn’t legal today. Not one thing has changed. Not one state changed its mind because of what Obama said. All that’s happened here is Obama came out and said ‘I think same-sex people ought to be able to get married, but it’s up to the states.’

“He said he thinks people of the same sex should be able to get married, and that alone opened up the checkbooks.”

Not everyone is being duped by the media blitz, however. In a statement Tuesday, House Speaker John Boehner said he's staying focused on jobs and the economy in the 2012 elections, and not President Barack Obama's support for gay marriage.
