Cruz Launches Petition to Kill Immigration Bill

By    |   Thursday, 20 June 2013 08:46 PM EDT

Sen. Ted Cruz , R-Texas, has made no secret of his opposition to the immigration bill currently being debated in the Senate. Now, he has launched a petition against it.

Cruz sent an email to supporters asking them to sign the online petition, Breitbart.com reports.

"This is urgent," the email said. "We must stop this Gang of 8 immigration bill, which would give amnesty to an estimated 11 million illegal immigrants with no guarantee of a secure border."

The Gang of Eight refers to the four Republicans and four Democrats who crafted the bill. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., has been the face of the bill in recent weeks.

The link to the petition goes to the freshman senator's campaign homepage, which does not include any wording for a petition – only a place to sign.

"The Senate debate is in the final stages and we need to send Washington a strong signal of the overwhelming grassroots opposition to this amnesty bill from Americans across the country," Cruz said in the email.

Cruz said on Wednesday that Democrats may have the votes to pass the bill in the Senate, but not in the House unless they are willing to compromise.
