Sen. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., warned President Donald Trump must release his tax returns if he is going to try and push through a comprehensive tax reform package.
"It's going to make tax reform much harder" if Trump doesn't release his returns, Schumer said.
Anytime the president proposes something on tax reform, "the average American is going to say, 'Oh, he's not doing that because it's good for me, he's doing it because it's good for him.' So, for his own good, he ought to make them public. And the big mystery is why he hasn't."
"I think he just has an obligation to come clean. When you clean up the swamp, it's not keeping things secret and applies to yourself."
Schumer's comments were reported in The Washington Post.
There is no law requiring Trump to release his tax returns, but his refusal to do so makes him the first president since Gerald Ford to not disclose his returns, according to the Tax History Project.
"This is not about the law, it's about custom and practice; it's a settled tradition," House Ways and Means ranking member Richard Neal, D-Mass., said.
Meanwhile, Schumer said Democrats want to see the president's return to determine if he or his family business have any conflicts of interests.
