Former President Jimmy Carter said the media was "harder" on President Donald Trump than previous presidents, The New York Times reported Saturday.

"I think the media have been harder on Trump than any other president, certainly that I've known about," Carter said. "I think they feel free to claim that Trump is mentally deranged and everything else without hesitation."

Lawmakers and critics have questioned Trump's fitness for office, with one lawmaker, Rep. Zoe Lofgren, D-Calif., introducing a resolution last August suggesting the president undergo a physical and mental health exam, The Hill reported Sunday.

Earlier this year, thousands of psychiatrists and psychologists signed a petition declaring Trump was "mentally ill and must be removed." And Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., recently called the White House "an adult day care center."
