Conservatives in the U.S. outnumber liberals by a 36-25 percent margin, a new Gallup poll reveals.
The poll notes that the conservative numbers are holding steady, while liberal numbers continue to inch up and the number of people identifying themselves as moderates are going down.
Here is how the poll breaks down:
- 63 percent of all Republicans identify themselves as conservatives — up from 57 percent in 2001.
- 30 percent of Republicans say they are moderates.
- Fewer than one in 10 Republicans calls themselves liberals.
- 44 percent of all Democrats consider themselves liberal — up from 30 percent in 2001.
- 41 percent of Democrats say they are moderates.
- 15 percent of all Democrats call themselves conservative.
"With most Republicans already identifying as conservative and more Democrats identifying as liberal, the parties are moving further apart ideologically," Gallup notes.
"The most obvious implication of this after the 2016 election is that the parties may increasingly nominate candidates who are wholly unacceptable to the opposing party."
