After criticizing Donald Trump just days ago, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is now labeling the presumptive Republican nominee a "gifted amateur."
In an interview with
CNN, Gingrich said Trump has made "the kinds of mistakes absolute amateurs make," but that he is also "learning very, very fast"
His comments came just days after he slammed Trump's remarks about U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel as "inexcusable." Curiel, who is of Mexican heritage, is overseeing the Trump University case.
Trump sparked major controversy when he suggested Curiel — who was born in the United States — may not be an impartial judge in a Trump University lawsuit. Trump has announced his desire to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border to prevent illegal immigrants from sneaking into the U.S.
CNN added: "Gingrich has referred to Trump's comments about Curiel as one of the candidate's 'worst mistakes,'" But it noted Gingrich does not believe that Trump's comments were racist.
"No, I thought they were inappropriate," Gingrich said, according to CNN.
And CBS News reports that Gingrich, while supporting Trump, is not shy about criticizing the candidate, as well.
"I've said all along, Trump has the greatest upside and the greatest downside of any candidate I've ever seen,"
CBS News quoted Gingrich.
"What we don't know yet is, as he pivots to the general election, and as he learns — I mean, he made a really stupid mistake … and it took him about three days in public to learn."
