Hank Johnson: Ben Carson Appeals to 'Lowest Common Denominator'

By    |   Monday, 08 December 2014 04:07 PM EST

Dr. Ben Carson appeals "to the lowest common denominator" and his supporters "have been whipped into a frenzy, like a lynch mob," says Democratic Rep. Hank Johnson and Congressional Black Caucus member.

"Barack Obama has been one of the greatest presidents that we have had in the history of this nation," Johnson said while appearing on "The Michael Smerconish Show" Friday.

"It’s unfortunate that since he raised his hand and took the oath in his first inauguration that he’s been met with nothing but opposition, and confrontation, and actual, personal dehumanization," he explained.

The Georgia Democrat said that there are even "African-Americans trying to tap in to that vein of ignorance . . . African-Americans like Dr. Ben Carson, who is a very smart, well-educated man and knows exactly what he's doing.

"When we have blacks like that trying to tap into the ignorance of people who have been whipped into a frenzy, like a lynch mob, and you go to try to garner support from these folks, I think it's very disappointing that we would have that kind of political discourse going on in this country," Johnson said.

He contends that Carson appeals "to the lowest common denominator."

Carson is a retired pediatric neurosurgeon who is considering a run for president in 2016 on the Republican ticket.

The potential presidential contender said in November, during a radio interview on "The Hugh Hewitt Show," that he believes race relations in the United States "were better before this president was elected. And I think that things have gotten worse because of his unusual emphasis on race."
