Political polls are a dime a dozen, but one entrepreneur says he has a fool-proof system to determine who will win the presidential election.
Fred Durham, who is CEO of CafePress, an internet retailer that sells political paraphernalia, says he has been able to predict every presidential election since his company started in 1999 based on the dollar amount of merchandise he has sold for each candidate, Louisville Business First reports.
Although it might not adhere to scientific standards, Durham says it makes sense that whichever candidate’s merchandise is selling more is the most popular and will therefore get more votes on election day.
One indication that this election is being followed more closely than usual is that those peddling election souvenirs are reporting higher sales compared to the previous campaign, with CafePress saying its business is up some 20 percent, Marketplace reports.
Another reason Durham gives for the accuracy of his predictions is that much of the political paraphernalia sold is actually designed by users, meaning it actually gives him an ideal of the pulse of the electorate.
And the popularity of certain items this election appears to reflect the historic antagonism displayed by the public against the two main candidates, as sales have been driven by items that are against one of the candidates, instead of those that express support for their favorite.
Durham also swears by the cross-section of his customers, since he says he sells on his Louisville-based site to people all across the U.S.
So, based on the results so far this campaign, Durham told Louisville Business First that Trump is the clear winner, as sales of Clinton-bashing merchandise is an overwhelming 814.88 percent higher than that for anti-Trump paraphernalia.
