A new poll shows Jason Carter, grandson of former President Jimmy Carter, leading in the Georgia gubernatorial race.
Rasmussen Reports says Carter, 38, is ahead of incumbent Nathan Deal by 7 points.
The organization polled 750 voters statewide in a telephone survey, and Carter led 48 percent to 41 percent. Seven percent remained undecided and 3 percent would likely choose another candidate.
The new poll is surprising because a previous sampling, on
Real Clear Politics, showed Deal up by more than 3 points.
Democrat Carter has said the election should be about the issues rather than his family name,
Politico has reported.
"My family legacy is one that I'm very proud of," Carter, a state senator, said, Politico reported. "My grandfather, I think, is known as a person of honesty and integrity, and folks want a little more of that integrity back in the governor's office, frankly. But that's not what this election will be about."
Deal, Politico reports, has criticized Carter for being from "the party that wants to raise your taxes, that wants to take away your freedom and wants to tell you what to do because they believe government knows best."
