Judicial Watch: State Dept. Paper a Benghazi 'Cover-up'

By    |   Tuesday, 27 January 2015 11:54 AM EST

In the latest round of documents obtained by Judicial Watch as part of its lawsuit against the Obama administration over the terror attack at the U.S. Embassy in Benghazi, Libya, the organization learned that the State Department knowingly misled the public about the reason for the organized attack.

"We received a press release that had been written erroneously by the State Department, the Diplomatic Security Command Center," Judicial Watch investigative reporter Irene Garcia said Tuesday on "America’s Forum" on Newsmax TV.

"Although they were watching the attack in real time via a drone, they sent this press release claiming it was a demonstration turned violent when, in fact, they knew that it was a very organized attack with heavily armed Islamic terrorists."

Judicial Watch, a conservative group that promotes transparency and accountability in government, has sued the State and Defense departments for records on briefings to congressional leaders on the 2012 Benghazi attacks that killed four Americans, including Ambassador Christopher Stevens.

The obvious implication, according to Garcia, is that there was a cover-up by the Obama administration.

"Judicial Watch has previously uncovered records of the unarmed, inexperienced security firm that was hired to protect our special mission in Benghazi when higher-ups in the Obama administration knew it was very violent and dangerous," she said.

"We've also uncovered emails where Ben Rhodes, one of Obama's top aides, purposely tried to cover up, to make the president look good and to stick to the false rhetoric that it was an attack that was organized by people that were demonstrating against this ridiculous, absurd video that no one had even heard of.

"Everything that Judicial Watch has uncovered indicates cover-up by the administration."

Garcia says it was in large part due to Judicial Watch’s work that a select committee was seated to investigate Benghazi and that the organization is in touch with lawmakers.

"Why did it take so long?" she asked. "Why on earth was this not investigated before? A U.S. ambassador was murdered for the first time in decades. This merits investigation and they finally sat the committee a few months ago.

"Hopefully they'll get to the bottom of it and tell the public once and for all what truly happened. The mainstream media has forgotten and the administration has great hopes that's what will happen, that it'll just fade in the wind."
