President Barack Obama’s warnings about horrific implications of the automatic spending cuts that are due to kick in Friday amount to “Mayan politics,” says Republican Rep. Pete Olson.
The Mayan calendar has frequently been used to predict the end of the world, with the most recent end date being Dec. 21, 2012.
“I rise today to ask the White House to lead, and turn away from Mayan politics," the Texan congressman said on the House floor Thursday, according to
The Hill. "The world is going to end! The world is going to end! This strategy of the president's automatic cuts borders on untruthful."
Olson cited a statement from the Federal Aviation Administration warning that more than 200 airports may be closed thanks to the so-called sequester. But the FAA admitted that only about 100 airports would actually be shuttered, he said.
"It's Mayan politics. Two hundred-thirty-eight affected airports puts more fear in people than 100 regional airports."
Other Republicans have pointed out that the White House holds some control as to which programs would be cut. They say Obama wants to lay off hundreds of thousands of people, putting fear into the public so that people pressure their congressmen to refrain from cutting spending.
