Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., had words of praise for Donald Trump's new pick for national security adviser, Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster — calling the respected military officer a "certified, card-carrying grown-up," The Washington Times reports.
"Every time they add a grown-up into that equation, we should all be happy," Whitehouse said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program.
"And I think McMaster is a certified, card-carrying grown-up and a very, very respected military officer (among) his peers.
"That protects against what one Republican witness at the Armed Services called the wildly stupid, dangerous, and illegal decisions that the White House can be expected to make.
"So that's one small piece, but that doesn't really affect this larger problem of a government that is non-responsive to human beings because it has become so dependent on corporate support and is so infiltrated by corporate power."
Peter Bergen, CNN's national security analyst, called the selection of McMaster "a brilliant decision."
"He's the smartest and most capable military officer of his generation…" Bergen said.
