CNN Sources: Trump Accusations About Corker Fake

By    |   Sunday, 08 October 2017 04:10 PM EDT

President Donald Trump's morning tweets claiming Sen. Bob Corker decided not to run for re-election because he turned down his request for an endorsement are false statements, two sources familiar with the talks told CNN on Sunday.

"The President called the senator early last week and asked him to reconsider his decision not to seek re-election and reaffirmed that he would have endorsed him, as he has said many times," one of the sources claimed, saying Trump had told Corker he would endorse him on the same day the Tennessee Republican said he planned to retire.

Trump charged, in a series of tweets over Corker's decision not to seek re-election in 2018, that the Tennessee lawmaker and Foreign Relations Committee "didn't have the guts to run."

Trump also accused Corker of blocking the administration's agenda, and claimed that the senator had wanted to become Secretary of State but he'd said "NO THANKS." He is also largely responsible for the horrendous Iran Deal!"

Corker responded with an insult of his own, calling the White House an "adult day care center" and that "someone obviously missed their shift this morning."

Corker and Trump have been butting heads for some time, including when the Tennessee lawmaker attacked Trump over his handling of violence in Charlottesville, Virginia in August.

At that time, Corker ripped Trump for lacking the "stability" or "some of the competence" to lead the country, and said radical changes are needed to make the White House a success.

Corker also rebuked Trump after what he and others considered to be Trump undermining Secretary of State Rex Tillerson's diplomatic efforts with North Korea. Corker said Tillerson, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, and White House chief of staff John Kelly, are "those people that help separate our country from chaos."
