Donald Trump slammed GOP Sen. Mark Kirk, saying he is to blame for showing low poll numbers in his reelection fight because the Illinois senator did not support him, according to The Hill.

At a town-hall event in New Hampshire, Trump was asked about Republicans who have not supported him, such as the 30 former GOP lawmakers who called the candidate an "unacceptable danger."

"I guess there's a gentleman in Illinois who's not doing very well," Trump said, referring to Kirk. "He was actually taking out ads against me. I said, are you sure he's a Republican? Maybe he's a Democrat. He's not doing well, but, hey, that's his problem. He wasn't for me and that's for political reasons."

Kirk's challenger, Democratic Rep. Tammy Duckworth, leads him by 7 points, according to RealClearPolitics.

Another set of polls showed Kirk gaining on his opponent.

In June, the Illinois senator rejected Trump, saying, "I cannot and will not support my party's nominee regardless of the political impact on my candidacy or the Republican Party."

Trump, however, said Republicans would retain their majorities in Congress thanks to his support.

"The Republicans are going to hold. They're doing terrifically well, far better than anyone thought, and we're going to win some states that never in a million years people thought we'd do well," said Trump.

The GOP is defending 24 seats this election, compared to the Democrats defending 10. Democrats need to come out with a net total of four seats gained to earn a majority in the Senate.
