Tennessee Republican Sen. Bob Corker has provided vetting information to Donald Trump's vice presidential search, according to
NBC News.
Corker spent July 5 at Trump Tower in New York City meeting with the presumptive GOP presidential nominee and his chief campaign officials, and got an invitation to fly on Trump's aircraft with him to an appearance in North Carolina, as part of the interview process.
At the North Carolina event, Corker walked onto the stage with Trump and said, "I wasn't going to say anything — I just came to visit," according to
The Tennessean.
He praised Trump and his relationship with his supporters, telling the audience: "The reason you love him so much is because he loves you. He loves you, and he wants the best for you."
The real estate mogul returned the compliment, saying Corker is "somebody respected by everybody."
Corker, like Trump, made his personal fortune in business. He has worked on immigration reform with plans right-wing critics have called "amnesty," according to the Tennessean.
The second-term senator is chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He has direct relationships with foreign ministers who serve allies of the U.S. and other countries, which could make him a valuable asset as a middleman between Trump and those countries, according to NBC News.
A.B. Culvahouse, the chief of Trump's vetting process, has known Corker for years and is a fellow Tennessee resident, according to
The Washington Post.
Former Knoxville Mayor Victor Ashe credited the possibility of Corker as a vice presidential nominee, according to the Tennessean. "It will strengthen the ticket and be a popular decision. He would be an outstanding vice president."
