Illinois Rep. Adam Kinzinger said he's getting closer to endorsing Donald Trump, but hasn't made up his mind yet.

"The one thing I won't do is support him enthusiastically," he told The Weekly Standard.

Kinzinger is an Air Force veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. He said he felt like it was his duty as a Republican official to support the party's nominee.

"I'm in a tough spot," he told the Weekly Standard.

The congressman said he opposes President Barack Obama's foreign policy, and doesn't want more of the same under Hillary Clinton. Asked whether Trump would be a better choice for foreign policy, Kinzinger replied, "I just don't know."

His top issue with Trump was when the Republican nominee claimed that Iraq leader Saddam Hussein helped kill terrorists.

According to The Rockford Register Star, Kinzinger said that struck a nerve because he was a veteran of fighting in Iraq.

"Because a lot of guys gave their lives to unseat him, I thought it was pretty offensive," he said, referring to soldiers who helped depose Hussein.

Kinzinger told the Rockford Register Star that he would like to endorse Trump. "I want to get there, I'm not ruling it out, but I'm not there yet."

He has been skeptical of Trump for a while. In February, he told Wolf Blitzer on CNN, "I don't think he's going to be the nominee but if he does, I'd have a long, hard decision to make, personally. I'd put my country over my party any day."
