House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi on Tuesday issued a statement condemning "Antifa" protesters who attacked anti-Marxist protesters and members of the media in Berkeley on Sunday.
"Our democracy has no room for inciting violence or endangering the public, no matter the ideology of those who commit such acts," Pelosi said. "The violent actions of people calling themselves Antifa in Berkeley this weekend deserve unequivocal condemnation, and the perpetrators should be arrested and prosecuted."
Masked Antifa — short for anti-fascist — have shown up amid peaceful counter-protesters in Charlottesville, Virginia, and other locations, drawing criticism from conservatives. On Sunday, they pepper-sprayed Joey Gibson, head of the Patriot Prayer group that had organized the conservative rally.
They also attacked journalists from the Los Angeles Times and the liberal publication Mother Jones.
