Ben Carson said Wednesday that the parents of the slain Muslim Army captain that attacked Donald Trump last week should apologize to the presidential nominee because they accused him of "something that's not true."

"I don't think it would be harmful if they apologized to him and he apologized to them," Carson, who has endorsed Trump, told Wolf Blitzer on CNN. "But I don't see that happening."

When asked why the parents, Khizr and Ghazala Khan, should apologize to the nominee, Carson responded: "If you accuse someone of something that's not true, it usually is a reasonable thing to acknowledge that."

Blitzer did not ask the retired pediatric neurosurgeon to elaborate further.

Khizr Khan bashed Trump's plan to ban Muslims from entering the United States during a speech at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia.

His son, Humayun Khan, 27, of Bristow, Va., was killed by a car bomb in Iraq in 2004. He was awarded the Purple Heart and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

Trump said Tuesday that "I don't regret anything" in attacking the Khans.

Carson told Blitzer that he believed that Khizr Khan slammed the Republican nominee because he is still grieving over his son's death.

"Any family who loses service members are people for whom we should have great sympathy — and certainly I feel very much for those families.

"Recognize that they are grieving," he added. "Very often, they will say and do things out of that grief.

"I think we should just give them a pass and move on."
