Republicans eager to elect a non-politician for president are decidedly open to the low-key retired pediatric neurosurgeon Ben Carson, a new survey shows.
The Wall Street Journal reports a recent survey by TargetPoint Consulting, a Republican polling and data-research firm, finds about two-thirds of likely GOP primary voters polled said they'd consider supporting Carson – the highest level of support for any candidate in the field.
By comparison, 54 percent of GOP primary voters would consider voting for Trump—a big jump from the 20 percent who said so in May — but a third said they wouldn’t, twice the level of resistance for Carson. The poll’s margin of error is plus or minus 3.6 percentage points.
Carson is running third in a average of national polls, behind Trump and Jeb Bush,
Real Clear Politics reports.
The Journal notes the TargetPoint survey shows one of every three Republicans who would consider voting for Trump said he was their clear favorite to be the nominee. But more than half would consider backing Carson and Sen. Marco Rubio — in addition to those voters who already name either as their favorite, the Journal reports.
For Carson, three of every four Republicans who know who he is would consider nominating him for president, the survey shows, according to the Journal.
