Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker won't be Donald Trump's vice president, but he may end up in his Cabinet,
according to USA Today.
"It's a highly political job, and that's not who I am,"
Corker told The Washington Post when, despite extensive vetting, he withdrew his name from Trump's list of running mates on Wednesday. "There are people far more suited for being a candidate for vice president, and I think I'm far more suited for other types of things."
Corker vowed to assist the presumptive GOP nominee in his campaign, and now analysts are saying he's nicely situated for a top post in a Trump administration, should the billionaire New Yorker win in November.
"I think a Cabinet position, especially secretary of state, is always what has been on his radar," Kent Syler, assistant professor of political science at Middle Tennessee State University, told USA Today.
As chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Corker is well-positioned to succeed current Secretary of State John Kerry, who preceded Corker as the panel's chairman.
"If the president calls you to serve, certainly it's your responsibility to sit down and strongly consider that," Corker told the newspaper. "But to try to respond to conjecture (about a specific position) at this point is just not appropriate."
The senator is "an experienced business person, and he can go into a variety of situations and serve very well," Tennessee-based political consultant Tom Ingram told USA Today. "But I think his sweet spots are foreign relations, and he has always been recognized for his understanding of the markets and financial institutions and the economy and how all of that relates to each other."
Trump has yet to announce any Cabinet choices, or his running mate, though on Thursday, Newt Gingrich confirmed that he is being vetted for vice president,
according to CBS News. The network also said New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Indiana Gov. Mike Pence remain possible choices as well.
