Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., received praise from Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., Tuesday for standing up "for all the things that make our nation great."
Corker made the comments to an NBC reporter after Flake announced he would not run for re-election in 2018.
Flake, in his shocking speech on the floor Tuesday, blasted Republicans and President Donald Trump, saying his party was abandoning "core principles in favor of "anger and resentment."
"It is clear at this moment that a traditional conservative who believes in limited government and free markets, who is devoted to free trade, and who is pro-immigration, has a narrower and narrower path to nomination in the Republican Party — the party that for so long has defined itself by belief in those things," said Flake.
Corker hours earlier bashed Trump during a set of TV interviews, saying the president was "absolutely not" a role model for children.
"I don't know why he lowers himself to such a low, low standard and is debasing our country," Corker said in a CNN interview.
"It's unfortunate that our nation finds itself in this place," he added.
