Conservative groups are still stinging from Republican lawmakers' failure to repeal Obamacare, but there are some wins out there to get with roughly 60 days remaining, The Daily Signal reported.
Those opportunities center on tax reform and spending cuts.
"With repeal of Obamacare clearly on the back burner, nearly all the attention and effort will be on tax reform," Dan Holler, spokesman for Heritage Action for America, told The Daily Signal. "If Congress and the Trump administration can deliver on pro-growth tax reform without going on a reckless, hurricane-induced spending binge this fall, they will have a lot to be proud of.
"The reality is that given the failures of the last eight months, securing major conservative policy wins is essential," Holler told The Daily Signal.
House Speaker Paul Ryan has promised tax reform will get done in 2017.
"I think we have a word to keep, and I think we all know we have to keep our word," Ryan said recently.
But when it comes to healthcare, outside groups are not willing to just forget about repealing Obamacare.
"Our supporters are very disappointed that Congress campaigned for years and years on repealing Obamacare and still have not repealed Obamacare and across the country, the grassroots activists have not given up on repealing Obamacare," Jenny Beth Martin, president of Tea Party Patriots, told The Daily Signal.
Lawmakers return to Capitol Hill on Tuesday, and the House has about 50 days remaining on the legislative calendar for 2017 vs. 60 for the Senate.
"The congressional agenda would be daunting even if lawmakers were content to just keep the trains running on time," Holler told The Daily Signal.
