Former communications adviser Jason Miller on Monday said retiring Sen. Bob Corker "should just resign" now over his running feud with President Donald Trump.
Miller made the comments on CNN's "New Day" morning program, suggesting that part of the issue with Corker is sour grapes over not getting a key role in Trump's administration after the election.
"Sen. Corker definitely didn't mind kissing up to President Trump when he wanted to be vice president, when he wanted to be secretary of state, but now, since he didn't get either of these positions, and now he's retiring, he just seems to be letting it all hang out there," Miller told CNN.
"I think it's really showing the true colors of the swamp nature of Washington D.C.," said Miller, the former campaign adviser for Trump who turned down a job in the White House after Trump was elected.
"If Sen. Corker is retiring and he doesn't wanna be in the U.S. Senate, and he doesn't wanna support President Trump … he should just resign," said Miller, suggesting that Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam could then appoint Rep. Marsha Blackburn to the seat that she intends to run for in 2018.
Pushing back on Miller was conservative pundit Bill Kristol, who made the point that Corker has been in lockstep with Trump until now, voting for legislation and candidates after being responsible for legitimizing Trump in 2016.
"This is typical of the Trump team," Kristol said. "They think these Republican senators and congressmen were sent there to rubber stamp whatever Donald Trump wants … but never say anything critical."
Corker owes Tennesseans "his candor. He owes them his best judgment; I wished he had exercised it a little earlier. But the Trump team thinks, you know what, you're there to do whatever Donald Trump says," Kristol shot back.
"The real swamp is blind loyalty to a president … instead of using your judgment," Kristol said.
