Donald Trump Again Hints at Possible Third-Party Run

By    |   Friday, 01 April 2016 10:18 PM EDT

Donald Trump refused again Friday to rule out an independent campaign for the White House if he is not the Republican presidential nominee — in the same week he talked of having a "unity meeting" with GOP committee head Reince Priebus.

"I'm going to see how I was treated," Trump told Fox News' Chris Wallace in an interview to be aired on Sunday. A 30-second excerpt of the conversation was released on Friday.

Wallace broached the subject by asking Trump: "Are you ruling out running as an independent third-party candidate? Are you ruling that out? It's a simple question."

"No, it's not that simple," the developer responded. "I'm by far the front-runner as a Republican.

"I want to run as a Republican," he said. "I will beat Hillary Clinton."

Trump met Thursday with Preibus, the chairman of the Republican National Committee, in a meeting both said had been pre-scheduled.

It came after the front-runner told a CNN town hall on Tuesday that he would not honor the pledge to support the party's eventual nominee that he signed with Priebus last September.

Trump afterward later called the gathering a "unity meeting" and described it as "a very nice meeting."

Priebus would not disclose what the pair specifically discussed.

The New York Times reported Friday, however, that sources inside the meeting disclosed that the chairman told Trump that he would not cede control of the RNC to Trump's campaign in the months leading up to the Nov. 8 election if he became the nominee.
